One thousand turn up to help celebrate environmental landmarksThursday, June 09, 2022
About 1,000 people turned out to the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo on Saturday to celebrate World Oceans Day and World Environment Day.
The facility, along with the Bermuda Zoological Society, hosted a free Family Open Day, where they demonstrated their “commitment to ocean conservation”.

BZS Welcomes Youth Climate Summit Participants to Trunk Island

On Saturday, 30th April, the Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS) invited 6 participants from the Youth Climate Summit, as well as the Youth Climate Initiative Consulting Director - Dr. Rosemarie McMahon, for a morning of planting native trees on Trunk Island, the BZS Living Classroom. Under the careful guidance of Trevor Rawson, the BZS Trunk Island Project Coordinator, the participants were able to plant 30 native and endemic trees - teaching them the importance of placing trees and shrubs in a newly graded and exposed coastal environment.
Warwick Playground Transformed by the BZS Micro Forest Project

If you drove along South Shore in Warwick last Saturday morning you may have seen a large group of people planting at Warwick Playground. The Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS) was joined by their Junior Volunteers, members of the BZS Science Club, individuals from the Government of Bermuda’s Department of Parks, employees from the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo and corporate volunteers from RenaissanceRe and Aspen Re to plant the second plot for the BZS Micro Forest Project.

The Bermuda Zoological Society recently organized the planting of 12 young coconut palms along the picturesque coastline of the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo’s [BAMZ] parking area.
A spokesperson said, “Over this past weekend, the dock area of Flatt’s was made a little more green! The Bermuda Zoological Society organized the planting of 12 young coconut palms along the picturesque coastline of the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo’s parking area.
“The mature coconut palms that currently stand in Flatt’s village were planted in the early 1930s. Several trees have been lost through a combination of their age and the damage they sustained through hurricanes. Not wanting to lose such a staple piece of Flatt’s beauty, the BZS stepped in to help.
“Working with Manuel Botelho of Greenway Landscaping, the BZS purchased 10 young coconut palms and Mr. Botelho donated two additional trees.”
Colin Brown, President of the BZS, said, “With the 100th anniversary of BAMZ fast approaching in 2026, and the 50th anniversary of BZS not far behind, the BZS were happy to plant seeds for the future.”
The spokesperson said, “On Saturday 8th May, 12 spaces were carefully mapped out along the waterline, and holes were dug by Derek Richold from DB Mini Excavating. Greenway Landscaping then planted the palms on Sunday, 9th May.”
Mr. Brown said, “The BZS continues to support education in Bermuda through the support of our membership and many corporate donors. We look forward to growing our schools programmes past the current 8000+ student experiences we provide annually.”

“Each year, BZS Volunteers contribute over 10,000 hours of valuable husbandry support to the Aquarium and Zoo with all programmes being accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.”
