Let the Hungry Games begin

Face-painting, hopscotch and selfie stations — they’re all part of The Hunger Games, Bermuda style.

The Bermuda Zoological Society is hoping to capitalise on the success of the blockbuster films, with a fundraising event dubbed Zoobilee: The Hungry Games.

Poison arrows, lionfish archery and slingshots will all be part of the night’s competition, and fuelled by a special brew — Nightlock Punch.

There will also be a live fire show and music in hopes of raising $100,000 for the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo.

“I had never seen the movie before coming up with this theme,” BZS development officer Lynda Johnson. “I have since watched it and it is a perfect idea. If anything, the challenge was curbing our enthusiasm. The ideas just poured out of us.”

The entire facility will be used for the October 4 event.

It will be divided into themed districts featuring “celebrity chefs” from the Island Restaurant Group, AZU Beastro, Flying Chef, The Supermart and Butterfield Bank. Each will serve tapas-style dishes which will then be followed by a proper feast, called the Cornucopia.

“Our goal is to raise $100,000 which will allow us to continue providing free educational opportunities that connect our children with nature,” said Ms Johnson.

The fundraiser runs from 7pm until midnight. All-inclusive tickets are $125 per person.
