New generation of coconut palm trees planted at BAMZ

A new generation of coconut palm trees have been planted around the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo.

The Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS) planted the 12 young plants over the weekend along BAMZ’s parking area in Flatts Village to add to the line of existing coconut palms and preserve the “staple piece of Flatts beauty”.

Volunteers spent Saturday afternoon mapping out spaces along the waterline before holes were dug up by Derek Richold, of DB Mini Excavating.

Greenway Landscaping then planted the trees - two of which had been donated to the cause by the company’s owner, Manuel Botelho.

A spokeswoman for BZS said that the original trees were first planted in the 1930s, but many had been lost to age and hurricane damage.

Colin Brown, the president of the BZS, said: “With the 100th Anniversary of BAMZ fast approaching in 2026, and the 50th anniversary of BZS not far behind, the BZS were happy to plant seeds for the future.”

He added: “The BZS continues to support education in Bermuda through the support of our membership and many corporate donors.

“We look forward to growing our schools programmes past the current 8000-plus student experiences we provide annually.”
