Turtles to be released and tracked
Royal Gazette
Friday, August 10, 2012

Alyssa Brewer

At least five green sea turtles with attached satellite transmitters are being released from Clearwater Beach next week.

Tuesday’s release is part of the inaugural Tour de Turtles Bermuda: Race on the Rock. It marks the first time Bermuda will have participated in Tour de Turtles, a project started in 2008 by the Florida-based Sea Turtle Conservancy that provides online tracking of sea turtles.

The project helps researchers learn more about sea turtles’ habits at sea, such as their feeding and migratory patterns. This research is then used to help determine the best ways to protect sea turtles.

Tour de Turtles Bermuda is a collaboration between the Sea Turtle Conservancy, the Bermuda Zoological Society, the Bermuda Aquarium, Museum and Zoo, Department of Conservation Services and RenaissanceRe.

The event is free and open to the public. The turtles are scheduled to be released at 8.30am, people are advised to be in place for watching at 8am.
