WEDNESDAY, NOV. 21: A generous youngster chose to donate funds to the aquarium instead of receiving birthday gifts this year.

Patraic O’Donnell asked his family and friends to give money to the Bermuda Zoological Society rather than bring presents to his party.

As a result the nine-year-old was able to collect $200 and pass it on to BZS Principal Curator, Dr Ian Walker.

In return for his generosity Patraic was given a behind-the-scenes tour of the aquarium and a wildlife book.

He also got up close and personal with Darth Vader the grouper.

His mum, Debbie O’Donnell, told the Bermuda Sun: “We try to encourage our boys to do something for charities or other groups in Bermuda when it comes around to their birthdays.

“And one of Patraic’s favourite places on the island is the aquarium so he chose to give the money to them.

“We did not expect for him to get the behind-the-scenes tour or anything like that, but he had a fantastic time with Dr Walker and it was very kind of the aquarium to do that for him.”

Dr Walker said Patraic’s gesture was greatly appreciated.

He added: “It always blows me away when a child this young does something for us.

“At that age children get really excited about their birthdays and so to be willing to give up their presents for someone else is an incredibly generous gesture.

“It’s a great life lesson for children.”
