Deloitte Staff Give Back During “Impact Day”
Bernews
Monday, November 25, 2013

Staff from Deloitte set aside laptops, phones and office duties recently on Deloitte’s annual Impact Day, a firm-wide day of volunteer service.

From Seymours Pond Nature Reserve to Bailey’s Bay Railway Trail, Deloitte teams put their muscles and brains to work – hunting lionfish, clearing invasive vegetation, visiting with seniors, cleaning, painting, cooking for those in need, and organizing food drive hampers.

Alternative Investments Senior Associate Estina Francis commented, “I chose to support the Packwood Home because they really make an impact for seniors in our community through their work.

“The seniors appreciated having us spend quality time with them, and in return we learned a lot about who they are as individuals, as well as some insight into Bermuda’s history. I found it a powerful and moving day to be able to work with them this year – and had a lot of fun in the process!”

Staff from Deloitte volunteered in teams. They cooked at Meals on Wheels, which provides food to seniors and feeding centers across the island. Staff also organized food hampers from goods donated during the week-long “Make Hunger History” campaign to help those in need.

Elsewhere, staff got grubby at the Seymours Pond Nature Reserve in Southampton, clearing overgrown vegetation and invasive plants. And at Bailey’s Bay Railway trail, staff painted and gave the area a general sprucing up for walkers, cyclists and runners to enjoy.

Under the sea, teams joined the battle against Bermuda’s lionfish invasion, diving deep to hunt these predators, which could have devastating effects on Bermuda’s marine ecosystem.

Meanwhile, teams on land also got wet, cleaning out water reservoirs and painting tanks at the Aquarium. Those who preferred to stay dry spent time participating in various recreational activities with residents of the Packwood Home.

John Johnston, CEO of Deloitte’s Bermuda and Caribbean region, commented, “I am proud of our staff for the positive change they achieve on Impact Day, and on each day of the year. It’s up to all of us to make a difference in our community.

“The power of Impact Day isn’t limited to just one day of service. It is a celebration of our ongoing drive to build a better Bermuda, whether through our individual volunteering efforts, or the pro bono work we deliver across the year to non-profit organizations across the island.”

The organizations that Deloitte staff volunteered for include, Ocean Support Foundation, Bermuda Zoological Society, Bermuda Audubon Society, Packwood Home, Friends of the Bermuda Railway Trail, Eliza DoLittle Society and Meals on Wheels.

Globally, Deloitte operates in 150 countries with close to 200,000 staff. On Impact Day, tens of thousands of Deloitte professionals across the globe volunteer at 800+ community service projects organized by more than 100 office locations worldwide.
