The Bermuda Zoological Society [BZS] has awarded the BZS Steinhoff Scholarship to Caroline Alexander, Isabella Murdoch, and Treiana Zuill, while Freyja Kermode was the recipient of the Pye award.
Collapse of seagrass beds threatens survival of marine life

The Bermuda Turtle Project is anxious to get back out onto the water this month to get a clearer picture of sea turtle abundance. Due to the restrictions brought upon us all by the pandemic, we have been unable to do any in-water research for nearly two years and it would appear, from observations, there have been some drastic changes in our marine environment.

The Bermuda Zoological Society recently completed its ninth year of the Kids on the Reef programme, which is generously sponsored by AXA XL. This year, the BZS sent Megan Dodd, a university student studying strategic communications and marketing, out with a student group so that she could provide a first-hand account of what the students experience and learn over the two-day programme.

Filming begins tomorrow on a TV documentary series which will explore the underwater life around Bermuda.
Ocean Vet, a 12-part series produced by UK-based gassProductions, features Bermuda vet Dr. Neil Burnie, well known for his research on marine species.
Cameras will continue to roll until April 20 and then again between June 7 to September 30.
“We are so excited to begin filming on the Island,” said Andrew Smith, series producer and director.
“This series is being produced with Bermuda in mind. I am very familiar with the island as I have family here.
“However, the majority of people I speak to around the world know very little about Bermuda and we hope to change that. In addition, we have engineered the production to employ skilled locals, use local assets and source local series investment.”
“Ocean Vet is a factual series set in Bermuda documenting the exploits of English veterinarian Dr. Neil Burnie, a man on a mission to conserve and protect Bermuda’s precious marine wildlife,” explains a series preview.
“Dr. Burnie will be transferring his veterinary skills to help 11 threatened marine species in Bermuda and alongside a specialist team, he will gather data in a bid to ensure their future.
“The breathtaking and thrilling series delves into a stunning underwater world teeming with life, bringing the viewer closer than ever to sharks, whales, lion fish, grouper, turtles and more.”

The series has been pre-sold to Cineflix Rights, a division of Cineflix Media Inc. and a leading, independent UK television distributor to be broadcast worldwide in 2015.
“Neil’s enthusiasm is truly infectious and his ‘hands-on’ invasive conservational approach to some of the most incredible and dangerous marine animals makes for captivating viewing,” said Mr. Smith. “We thank the Bermudian organisations and individuals who have financially backed this project thus showing their commitment to Bermuda and showcasing the beauty the island has to offer.”
