More than one thousand people helped celebrate Saturday’s World Oceans Day the Bermuda Aquarium Museum and Zoo (BAMZ) — many of them schoolchildren.

Joanne Chisnall, the Volunteer Coordinator of the Bermuda Zoological Society, said she believed that the event was very successful in accomplishing its main goals.

“We raised awareness about our oceans and the different NGO’s that take part in World Oceans Day,” she said.

“We had several different exhibitors including BIOS, the Marine Task Force, the Ocean Support Foundation and Greenrock.

“Everyone had a great smile on their face; we had people taking part in free diving and going into the big tanks.”

World Oceans Day has been celebrated by aquariums, zoos, museums and conservational organisations worldwide since the 1992 Earth Summit and in 2008 and was recognised by the United Nations.

But Saturday’s event was the first held at BAMZ.
