Junior Volunteer Programme
Students aged 14 to 17 spend one weekend morning during the school year volunteering at BAMZ in different departments: Aquarium, Zoo, Local Tails and Education. Sixteen openings are available. As part of the programme, students learn about Bermuda’s natural history and work together on environmental projects, for example fish surveys, trash clean-ups, culling and planting sessions. The JVs also help with BZS events when needed: Halloween, Christmas, Easter etc. They actively fundraise for their programme by offering various activities throughout the year: babysitting nights, sleep-overs, bake sales etc. This allows them to celebrate the end of the year with a week end on Trunk Island, to be exposed to scuba diving and every other year to participate in an oversea voyage. The JVs become part of the BAMZ/BZS family and some will get a chance to become Junior Staff when positions open after their year of volunteering.
Applications for the school year beginning in September must be received by mid-September at the latest. Short-listed students will be interviewed in September. The programme year begins in early October and runs until the end of June.
The online Junior Volunteer application will be available at the beginning of February each year. This is a programme that is more intense than Youth Volunteering as the JV’s presence is required on a regular basis once committed.
