Who We Are
At the Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS), we are educators, scientists, and conservationists dedicated to inspiring young people to explore, understand, and protect Bermuda’s natural environment. Through our hands-on programs, we bring science to life, giving students the tools and experiences they need to become confident, curious, and environmentally aware learners.
What We Do
We provide interactive, student-centred programmes that engage learners from Preschool through Senior school. Our approach focuses on inquiry, exploration, and real-world applications of Science. Students in our programmes:
Investigate environmental issues and conservation challenges
Gain practical experience in Science and Engineering through hands-on projects
Develop teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
Build an understanding of how Science connects to the world around them
Our programs follow best practices in science education, including the 5E learning cycle (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate), project-based learning, and alignment with international curricula such as Cambridge, IB, AP, and UK Creative Curriculum. By combining classroom learning with field experiences and experiments, students retain knowledge more effectively and leave with a deeper understanding of the natural world.

Linda Parker
Education Officer Â
Linda Parker is a lifelong educator with more than 40 years’ experience in Bermuda’s public and private schools, including 16 years as Head of BHS. She believes every student can thrive when learning happens in a positive and supportive environment. Linda holds a BA/BEd from Queen’s University in Canada and a Master’s in Education from the University of Exeter, UK.
Dr. Alexandra Amat
Ocean Lead Educator
Dr. Alex Amat leads BZS ocean education programmes that help students connect with Bermuda’s marine environment through exploration and research. An oceanographer with expertise in coral reef ecology, she designs interactive lessons from snorkeling to scientific investigation. Alex encourages curiosity, confidence, and conservation through hands-on learning. She also guides students in developing their own research projects and scientific thinking.
Camilla Stringer
Wild Encounters and Eco Cruisers Educator Â
Camilla Stringer coordinates educational programmes and lectures that connect the community with Bermuda’s natural world. She leads engaging experiences for adults and young learners that encourage understanding and care for island ecosystems. Camilla organizes the BZS Lecture Series and develops creative learning opportunities that make environmental education accessible, relevant, and inspiring to participants of all ages and backgrounds.
Lauren Gray
Terrestrial Education Lead
Lauren Gray helps students discover the value of Bermuda’s natural environment through hands-on learning and exploration. She aims to inspire curiosity and environmental stewardship in every learner. With a Master’s degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and research in Conservation Genetics, Lauren connects classroom learning to the real world through engaging, field-based experiences that deepen understanding and appreciation for nature.
Karl Darrell
Educator and Lead Animal Interpreter Â
Karl Darrell is an education specialist who brings learning to life through outdoor and marine experiences. A certified PADI diver and Advanced Bushcraft Leader, he inspires curiosity, creativity, and confidence in young learners. Karl’s child-centered approach builds strong foundations for exploration, discovery, and wonder. He holds a BA (Hons), MA, and Early Years Professional Status in education.
Hollyanne Shirley
Education Administrator
Hollyanne Shirley supports the BZS Education Department by managing programme administration. She coordinates registrations for Aqua Camp, Science Clubs, Wild Encounters, BZS Lectures, and other education events. Hollyanne enjoys being part of a passionate team dedicated to inspiring young people to appreciate Bermuda’s environment and develop a lifelong commitment to environmental care and understanding through engaging learning experiences.
