Internship Opportunities

BZS in collaboration with BAMZ offers immersive internships for students interested in environmental science, marine conservation, and hands-on learning with animals. Our internships provide real-world experience, helping students develop practical skills while contributing to meaningful research and conservation projects. Opportunities are available for Bermudian, American, and Canadian Citizens, each with unique programs designed to enrich learning and foster a deeper connection to Bermuda’s delicate ecosystems.

Ernest E. Stempel Foundation Summer Internship Programme – Bermudian Citizens

This six-week internship is open to Bermudian college and university students, or PRC holders, and includes a stipend. Interns gain hands-on experience in animal care, research, and conservation projects at BZS and BAMZ, while developing a deeper understanding of Bermuda’s island ecosystems.

James W. Babcock Internship Programme – American Citizens

Named in honour of long-time BZS board member James W. Babcock, this six-week internship offers American undergraduate or graduate students experience in marine conservation projects, research, and animal husbandry. Interns are responsible for travel to and from Bermuda, but receive accommodations, a weekly meal stipend, and a monthly public transportation pass.

John L. and Karen C. Pye Memorial Internship – Canadian Citizens

Established in 2001 in memory of John and Karen Pye, this internship is awarded annually to a Canadian student studying marine or environmental science. Interns gain hands-on research and education experience at BZS and BAMZ. Travel to and from Bermuda is the intern’s responsibility; accommodations, a weekly meal stipend, and a monthly public transportation pass are provided

Eligibility requirements:

Must be 18 years of age or older.
Enrolled as a college or university student entering second year with a minimum GPA of 2.5.
Interns must commit to an uninterrupted six-week internship with a five-day work week. (Not necessarily Monday- Friday).
Interested in pursuing a career in animal care & husbandry, research, natural history, conservation or environmental education.
May be required to work independently with minimal supervision.
Should also be self-motivated, adaptable.
Interns must be able to lift and manage 50lbs and perform physically demanding tasks (for example: climbing in and out of tanks, on and off boats, moving frozen food and lifting feed bags) and comfortable with rugged terrain.
Be able to work in rain as well as a hot and humid environment depending on the programme choice.
Up-to-date Tetanus vaccine.
First Aid/CPR/AED certification

A transcript (it does not have to be an official copy) with a verification that you are enrolled at a college or university, entering your second year or above, starting September 2025.
A letter of interest stating your reasons for wanting to participate and your desired personal outcome.

Our interns gain a deeper understanding of the important role aquariums and zoos play in promoting conservation and education.
