BERMUDA ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY LAUNCHES NEW BOOK ON ISLAND¹S REEF FISH10/06/2008 (Press Release) - Bermuda Zoological Society (BZS) launches a new book this week showcasing the Island’s vibrant reef fish and other marine life.

Bermuda Reef Portraits, by Bermudian photographer Ron Lucas, is a fascinating visual guide for divers, snorkellers and marine enthusiasts. The 88-page, full-colour edition, published by BZS and produced by Brimstone Media Ltd., provides stunning photographs and informative descriptions of the most common reef fish found in local waters. From the regal Queen Parrotfish to the friendly Puddingwife or endangered sea turtle, the book’s 11 chapters portray Bermuda’s main fish groups and the variety of other marine life. Notably, the book’s images detail subtle differences between similar fish species, and highlight the overall beauty of Bermuda’s coral reefs.

The book is now on sale for $24.95 at the BZS Gift Shop at Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo and at many other bookstores, dive shops and retail outlets Islandwide. All proceeds from Bermuda Reef Portraits go to BZS, the support charity for Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo, for exhibits, events and vital conservation, research and education programmes.

“We are very proud of this new edition, which captures the unique beauty of Bermuda’s coral reefs and diverse marine life,” says BZS President Bill Scott. “The Island is very fortunate that our reefs remain healthy, compared to other regions, and that they support such a wide array of underwater life.”

Lucas was introduced to diving in 1996 by his son Ben, then a diving instructor. He soon took up underwater photography—and found the hobby addictive. Since then, he has gathered thousands of images on his year-round dive expeditions. Lucas provides the BZS and the local REEF organisation with images for educational and reference purposes. He also supplies photos to corporate Bermuda.

“This has been a fulfillment of my photographic journey to date,” says Lucas, 60, a member of the BZS Executive. “I’ve been overwhelmed by the wonderful support I’ve received. The BZS is a natural partner for this project, because of its commitment to conservation research and education. It really is my wish that every child growing up in Bermuda learns more about the ocean environment and the creatures within it.”

Copies of Bermuda Reef Portraits will be presented by Environment Minister the Hon. Elvin James JP MP to student representatives of local schools Wednesday morning at Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo. The book is being formally launched at a reception for to BZS members and book retailers at BAMZ Thursday evening.
